Urban Concepts takes a refreshing and realistic approach to communications. We recognise that effective communication requires active listening, understanding and negotiation. Our approach encourages cooperation and a mutual respect for, and understanding of, client and community concerns and aspirations. Leichardt Bus Depot

Client: NSW State Transit Authority,
Urban Concepts implemented a community consultation program to coincide with the redevelopment of the Leichhardt Bus Depot site. The program involved community information days, newsletters, 1800 Hotline, Stakeholder Briefings and Hoarding Signage.


Post, 46A Macleay Street, Potts Point

Client: Ashington Group
Urban Concepts formulated and implemented a community consultation strategy to coincide with the preparation and lodgement of the development application for the redevelopment of the Potts Point Post Office site into a boutique office development. This development was approved by the Council of the City of Sydney.


Duntroon Avenue
Residential Development

Client: Australand
Urban Concepts worked with Australand to design and implement a community consultation program for the SEPP 53 residential development site at Duntroon Avenue, St Leonards now referred to as 'The Pavilions'. The consultation program involved direct mail newsletters, information days, resident attitude surveys and meet and greet door to door interviews. The consultation program assisted in the approval of this multi-unit residential scheme that has gone on to receive design awards from the UDIA.

Belinda Barnett, Director

With highly sought after qualifications and experience in urban planning, community relations, marketing and issues management, Urban Concepts is widely regarded as one of Australia's foremost property, planning and communications consultants.


Belinda Barnett, Director of Urban Concepts career began more than 25 years ago when she worked at various local councils including the City of Sydney, before accepting senior private sector urban planning roles. In the early nineties, Belinda managed Communications for the Homebush Bay Development Corporation, helping to articulate to Sydney and the world how an unglamorous abattoir site would be reconfigured into an international sporting facility to support the first Green Olympic Games.


Since 1994 Belinda has been utilising her skills under her own banner and distinct business model. She has gone on to provide top level counsel for a formidable list of Government and globally recognised private sector companies.

With all Urban Concepts work flowing from word-of-mouth referrals, Belinda is frequently a first point of contact for developers, architects, financiers and government agencies looking to engage with communities at the outset of major projects. Her strategic skills ensure that local sentiments are captured, gauged and responded to with a view to creating the smoothest possible passage for project approval and completions.


Leadership and Mentoring
Belinda has also been in demand to fill multiple industry leadership and mentorship roles throughout her career. During the late 1990's she guided and advised emerging businesses as part of the NSW Governments Women in Business Program.


She has played major roles with the Planning Institute of Australia as co-convener of Young Planners, an initiative now boasting a thriving student and graduate membership.


Belinda also served on the Institute's NSW Divisional Committee for many years, some of that time as Vice President.


Awards and Recognition

Belinda's career is underpinned by multiple prestigious awards and recognitions, including being one of the first fifty women to be inducted into the Businesswomen's Hall of Fame.


She remains an active member of the Royal Australian Planning Institute and is also a member of the NSW Consulting Planners, PIA Social Planning Chapter and the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA).
